The Past is a Blast at Shari’s Diner
There are a number of things that I love about 50’s style diners. They remind me of hot rods and muscle cars and kids hanging out after school. They were a place where the family went out together to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion. Sometimes they were the destination as you nervously maneuvered through that first date. Eating fries at the counter. Your friend’s older brother was a line cook. And of course…the music blaring from the jukebox and you always had at least one couple dancing in the aisles. Girls giggling together as they put the coin in and made their next selection. There are not too many places around that nostalgically take us back to an era that did not last long enough. Yet Shari’s Diner is one of the places that takes us gloriously back.
Good things are happening at Shari’s Diner…a place where Happy Days are an everyday occurrence. I was able to come in and sit at the counter and have the opportunity to talk food with Colette and Michael with the orders coming to and from and kitchen and the music rolling out of the jukebox. Shari’s Diner has an impressive exterior but the inside is just wonderful with colorfully upholstered booths and little mini-jukeboxes on the tables. You might drive by Shari’s on North Buffalo near Lake Mead and think that there couldn’t possibly be anything vegan that you could eat in there apart from a salad. Well, as you can see by the pictures that is not exactly the case. Shari’s has a vegan burger on their menu. Not the veggie burgers that fits the bill for vegetarians, but not vegans. This is a certified vegan burger. They are in the process of changing the buns out or these so I had my Vegan Burger on toasted whole wheat bread. Fresh tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, and onions and throw on a little spicy mustard and we were ready to rock. You can have some regular fries with this but I opted for the sweet potato fries and they were a great compliment to the burger. The burger itself was very good, moist and flavorful, and I can’t wait to try it again when they get some new buns for it.
I can’t talk right now about some of the things that might be coming on the menu at Shari’s but when the time is right I will go back and write about it and let you know. All I can say is that there is going to be a continued commitment to fresh and healthy alternatives as well as more that could be vegan-friendly. More reason to go and have a blast from the past. There are not too many places like this around anymore so it is important that we treasure what we have here and continue to give them our love. Shari’s is a wonderful bridge to the past…a great place to be in the present…and a hopeful place to be in the future.
