On a trip downtown I found myself heading towards Rainbow’s End and the Veggin Out Cafe for a little lunch because I knew that they would have something of the raw variety to help me out.  I am now three weeks into my month of raw vegan eating and I have been trying some things that I know I normally might now have tried.  I am appreciating all of the prep that goes into raw food cuisine.  It is not always time-consuming but there is no cooking really involved so the time is relative.  It is the creativity in preparing a dish not only without a piece of meat or fish to build around, but also using whole ingredients in a beautiful and body and palate-pleasing way.

The Veggin Out Cafe has a wonderful little menu filled with vegetarian and vegan items.  They also have a raw section and I was intrigued by the Raw “Tacos.”  It was a wonderful presentation of red cabbage leaves filled with nutritional yeast, flax meal, avocado, carrots and sprouts.  I poured a little Braggs Amino Acids on top of each for a little zing and I enjoyed these little “tacos” very much.  The cabbage leaves are very sturdy and very colorful so you can only imagine the fun you could have filling these with a variety of other things.  Not to mention that they are so much healthier for us than a traditional taco shell.

While you are at Rainbow’s End you can literally browse for hours at all of the health, nutritional, and other items to encourage your mind, body, and spirit.  They have refrigerated items and frozen items along with rows and rows of bulk items and other dry goods.  They also have a good little selection of books to purchase.  Rainbow’s End once again reminds me of places I used to visit in Santa Cruz or San Francisco near where I grew up and lived most of my life.  That just makes me smile.  Come on down and grab lunch or an early dinner and browse a little and give them some love.  Peace.
