No, I did not spell it wrong. It actually is Cheeburger, Cheeburger and you may not know about this place that has been out in the Southwest part of the valley on Rainbow near Blue Diamond for the past 4 years. It has a little bit of a 50’s diner feel to it and provides plenty of options, even if you eat plant-based. If you are out with someone who is not yet vegan, it is another place to go where you can find something to eat and so can they. When both of your meals show up they might look similar in some ways but there will be a huge difference. You often times don’t even have to say anything…it is quite obvious. Questions naturally come as a result and this is how change begins to happen.
Cheeburger Cheeburger does have a veggie burger but it is not vegan. What they do have is large portobello mushroom caps that they can prepare for you in a number of ways. The restaurant has an extended list of toppings that you can put on any meal for free, no limit to how many you can choose. That is kind of cool. There are a few that have a nominal charge added. You can have your portobello on a platter without a bun with as many other veggies and toppings as you wish. You can get it in a wrap. Or you can get it as a burger or a sandwich fixed up just how you like it.
I went for the burger option and I had it will roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, grilled onions, and mustard. It was really, really good. It gave me that burger feel and yet it was a kind and compassionate option that was delicious and also a fraction of the calories. Most of the options for meals at Cheeburger Cheeburger are about meat and dairy. But if you want to go to a place to share a meal with someone who is pre-vegan…you can model for them exactly how it is done. Just smile as you are enjoying your portobello…good things will happen from there.
