Eating Vegan In Vegas

FOR ANIMALS...FOR HEALTH...FOR THE PLANET

A Garlic and Pepper Delight

I most definitely have my list of favorite Thai places here in Las Vegas, but it does not prohibit me from stopping and trying new ones that I find.  I have yet to have a less than quality Thai meal, perhaps I am fortunate to say that. I love the Thai cuisine because it can be very vegan-friendly and I appreciate the liberal use of spices and vegetables.  I was once again pleasantly surprised as I enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Surang’s Thai Kitchen on S. Fort Apache Rd.

Some of the Thai restaurants you go to now will have clearly marked vegetarian and vegan items on their menus.  Other dishes just lend themselves naturally to being vegan-friendly.  One of the culprits you have to ask about on the ones that are not marked is fish or oyster sauce, which they can use in a lot of their sauces.  Some restaurants will substitute soy sauce instead for you, or you can just find entrees that don’t have the fish and oyster sauce.  I decided to try one of those dishes at Surang’s, the Garlic and Pepper stir fry with tofu.  It was a lovely dish with broccoli, cabbage and tofu stir-fried in a delicious garlic and pepper sauce with crushed peanuts and spices on top.  You can have it with rice or just eat it as it is…which is absolutely delightful.

Surang’s has a fairly extensive menu with a number of items that are naturally vegan-friendly and a number of others that can be easily modified. I will definitely come back again and try something else off of the menu. This is another restaurant along the emerging restaurant corridor on S. Fort Apache on the west side of town that features quite a few establishments that offer plant-based eating options.  It is a good thing to see so many new restaurants opening up and doing so with a conscience towards the emerging food choices that a growing number of people are asking for. We are slowly seeing a shift in our culture and it is being reflected in our food choices.  This is a very good thing for animals, for our health, and for the planet.
