I like to get out there and create a buzz and build a bridge for restaurants to those who are looking for plant-based eating options. I also like to follow the buzz when I hear others talking about a particular restaurant. That was the case with China Mama, a restaurant on S. Jones near Spring Mountain and the Chinatown Corridor. I have read a number of reviews about China Mama and knew that they have won the Review Journal’s Best Of Award. I wanted to see for myself what I could find.
I noticed on the menu that they had a few veggie options on the menu and they weren’t the typical veggie stir-frys you will find in a lot of places. I was in the mood for something a little different and something a little spicy so I went for the Kung Pao Cabbage. You know if you have ever had a Kung Pao-anything dish that it was going to have some heat attached to it. I let the server know that I didn’t want anything a fish sauce in it and that was not a problem with the Kung Pao Cabbage. Nice bite-sized pieces of stir-fried cabbage with pepper pods and a delicious soy-based sauce. It had some nice heat to it and served with some rice it was a spicy but nice light meal to enjoy.
Now before you think that cabbage is not all that exciting, there is more to it than most people think. Cabbage is an excellent source of vitamin C. It also contains a significant amount of glutamine, an amino acid with anti-inflammatory properties. It is also a source of indole 3-carbind, a chemical which boosts DNA repair in cells and appears to block the growth of cancer cells. It also helps with thyroid conditions. Spice all that up.
China Mama has a few other veggie dishes you can try but I think they will work with you to create something special for you from the many dishes they offer. As is necessary in most situations, make sure to let them know what you want and don’t want. You can get tofu added with almost any dish and cooked a variety of different ways. China Mama seems to be a cut above most Chinese restaurants and I like that. Now, I understand what all the buzz was about.
