Mongolian BBQ - Vegan Style

I have had Mongolian-style BBQ many times over the years but it has been quite a while. I have never heard of the the Genghis Grill chain until I saw a restaurant pop up in Henderson this past month. Genghis Grill is based out of Dallas, TX and is in about half of the United States right now with plans to move into the others as well. This restaurant in Henderson is the first Genghis Grill in Southern Nevada. Every time I have driven by there seems to be a good crowd there so I knew it was somewhere I wanted to try soon. The fact that it is five minutes from my home helps as well.
It is a nice sized restaurant and I found the staff very helpful. They will explain everything you need to know about the Mongolian BBQ experience and walk you through it. Let them know you want to do yours vegan style with only veggies, spices, and sauces. That is not a problem. They will guide you through it and you can ask about any of the sauces and what is in them. They give you a bowl and you first put in your spices that you want and then pile it high as you can with veggies…and they have a good selection to choose from. Then you pick a sauce…I went with a hot one. The key here is piling it high so you will get a nice full bowl when it is cooked. The experienced folks learn the art of piling it on. For $3.00 more you can get an unlimited bowl and go back for more as you like, When you get up to the cooking area you will see a very large round grill that they cook the items on. Let them know you are doing a vegetarian-vegan bowl and they will cook it on a special section of the grill away from the ones with meat. That was thoughtful. You can also pick what you want the veggies on…from rice to noodles to a tortilla. I chose brown rice.
You can stand there and watch them cook it or you can just head back to your seat and they will bring it out to you when you are done. Every once in a while they make the grill light up on fire and they ring their big gong there and everyone starts shouting…a little friendly mayhem for a few moments. Part of the experience. My bowl turned out wonderful. Spiced just right and a great portion. The fun will be to come back and experiment a little bit with different spices and sauces. I think it is a fun and unusual dining experience and lends itself very well to those of us looking for a vegan-friendly meal and really allows us to participate in the creation of the meal from start to almost-finish. I think Genghis Grill is going to do well here and it is nice to have a place that can give us an almost unlimited option and combination of flavors and ingredients. I will be back to get my bowl on again very soon.
