Eating Vegan In Vegas

A Big Slice of Vegan Pizza Nirvana…

I have been waiting anxiously for Slice of Vegas Pizza to open in the Mandalay Place.  Just a week ago this exciting new restaurant opened up, right next door to Hubert Keller’s Burger Bar. I was hopeful that this new restaurant would be something special for both the locals and the many tourists who pour through Mandalay Place.  Score a big one for Slice of Vegas Pizza here. They are that and so much more.

The restaurant is spacious and inviting.  Lots of comfortable red booths to sit and enjoy bits and pieces of Las Vegas adorning the walls as well TV’s that you can enjoy from any angle in the restaurant.  I found a place at the great bar as I am prone to do when I am dining alone.  I was taken care of there by the lovely Sarah.  Things started off with a refreshing Watermelon Iced Tea which was fantastic.  They have other flavors as well.  Slice of Vegas Pizza is not just vegan-friendly…they are come on in and let us take real good care of you vegan-friendly.  I liked that a lot.

I had the wonderful opportunity to chat with the general manager, Tony “Big Slice” Cordovana and found out a little bit more about the restaurant. He told me that one of the owners was vegan and they wanted to make sure what they do vegan- wise be top notch.  Sound good to me.  All of the bread in the restaurant is vegan, as is the gnocchi which I will be enjoying with some grilled veggies and sauce.  The pizza crusts are all vegan. They use only the freshest ingredients and let’s just say they do things a bit differently back in the kitchen.  There are a number of things you could enjoy on the menu but you have to try the vegan pizza.

This is a superb vegan pizza with Daiya cheese, caramelized onions, bell peppers, sundried tomatoes, mushrooms, a little eggplant, fresh basil and a wonderful sauce. This was as good a vegan pizza as I have ever had the chance to enjoy. The 12” is perfect for two people to enjoy with six big slices. This was the first time that I had this pizza but it will not be the last.  I also had the fortune to meet one of the owners, who is vegan, and got to go a lot more in depth with things and I was very impressed by their approach to everything.  Always ask if they can modify something for you and they will do everything they can to make it happen for you. He also let me in on a little secret that I am now telling you about…the chocolate cake in the dessert section is actually vegan.  Oh my.  I was able to take a piece of it to go.  I did not have my tape measure with me but I would estimate that it was close to three inches high with a knock you out delicious and moist chocolate cake topped with a peanut butter chocolate frosting that you will have to taste to believe.

The reality is that we have some great pizza options now here locally for vegans.  Slice of Vegas Pizza and I are going to get very well-acquainted.  It is going to be hard to try anything else on the menu because I want to repeat again what I just had.  Somehow I will manage.  I know there will always be chocolate cake waiting.  If you live near or you live far…make your way to Slice of Vegas Pizza…ask for “Big Slice” to come by and say hi and then enjoy some vegan-friendly food love.  You and I will be happy that you did.
